Titolo: Japanese maserati ghibli cup 2.8 (no typo) lost in belgium Mer 29 Ago 2012 - 10:07
Hi everyone.
Proud owner of a maserati ghibli GT 2.0 (ex-sarosalemi), I had the opportunity to acquire another one, a "japanese" cup. The VIN of the car is ZAM336B00*00361742.
The car was in Tallinn, Estonia, (not so) freshly imported from Japan.
When I saw the offer on autoscout, I was a little bit sceptical: the price was low for a cup, the interior wasn't original (cloth recaro seats), alloy wheels were in bad shape, etc... And I've never heard about a 2800cc CUP before.
I sent an email to maserati classiche with the vin to see if they could give me more information about the car and they confirmed that the car was one of the 27 maserati CUP 2.8 made especially for the japanese market. Interesting.
I took contact with some japanese maseratisti and they tell me that the japanese ghibli cup comes with a ECU modification, and the 2.8 produces now 305PS@ 6100rpm and 43,5kgm@3650rpm!
They said: In 1997, based on the image of the Race version of the Ghibli was done the road version, in Japan about 26 to 27 units (unconfirmed) have been sold. Changes to normal, by increasing the boost pressure, demonstrate 305ps/6100rpm and 43.5mkg/3650rpm. The final gear ration is lowered about 6%. Undercarriage was lowered about 30mm is also encased damper spring also, but this also increases the negative camber of the front wheel toe-in, at the rear. It is also said that each Bush also has been solidified, but how is not clear. Tire size is one size larger F 215/45ZR17, and R 245/40ZR17, mounting aluminum wheels made by speedline. Brakes are also larger with Brembo calipers.
Now, it's really interesting.
So, as Tallin seemed to be a nice place for a citytrip with my wife, I took a plane the next weekend to inspect the car.
As expected, the car wasn't in perfect state, but not as bad as imagined. No rust on the body, engine seemed fine and Rosso maserati is really eye catching.
The car will need a complete engine service (both timing belt and chain, 74000km on the odometer), new steering rack (it leaks a lot), new front brake discs, new pads, new tires, a wheel refurb, new interior, and so on...
We agreed on a incredibly low price (for me, at least) and the car was sent to Belgium on a truck.
I'm in the process of restoring it (complete story on a french forum if your are interested: http://maseratitude.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1159 )
I hope that the car will be registred for november.
Unfortunately, I have no service history with the car. I've send an email to all japanese maserati dealers, but no one responded yet (except Cornes). I've contacted the maserati club of Japan, but they didn't know the car either.
I know that some of you are from Japan, or are in touch with japanese maseratisiti. If you can help me to find some infomation about the car, I will be really grateful.
I hope that you've found the story interesting.

Gio, è normale perchè come insegna il buon Big, molti nipponici cultori delle auto ordinano le auto italiane da colezione con la guida a Sx anzichè a Dx (cosi come qualche colezionista italiano di auto inglesi non disdegna la guida a dx).

Mauroracing is right.
The japanese often have "special editions" for them. And if the car is from an italian brand, it will be left hand drive.
Another exemple is the Lancia Delta HF Integrale Edizione Finale 250 built, 250HP

Thanks to all of you.
I'm still trying to find some information about the car. If you have some contacts in Japan (Bigfoot maybe?), could you ask them about it, VIN is ZAM336B00*00361742. There wasn't so many ghibli cup 2.8 (In japanese, it's Giburikappu: ギブリカップ ) in Japan (only 27), it should be possible to find something.
Last week, I've done some work.
Everyday, the body looks better and better.
I worked a little bit on the exhaust (autoglym metal polish is an incredible product).

And the wheels were refurbished.

Friday update.
So, every thursday, I have half a day to work on the car.
First, I went to put some tires on the wheels, toyo proxes T1 sport. Not expensive, but very good review. It's a lot of rubber.
Then I've passed 5 hours polishing the left and rear side of the body.
The paint wasn't in perfect shape, a lot of swirl, claws and defects.
The previous owner used massively corrector pen on the bodywork, and the job done was far from perfect. I had to do wetsanding on a lot of spots.
It takes a lot of time to put the shine back on the body but the result is pleasing (in my eyes at least). I used Poorboy SSR2 and SSR1
The result
There is still some stone chips on the driver door but I can live with that.
Rosso maserati is a really hypnotising color.
Then, I put back the front grill.
Body work almost finished.
I hope you enjoy the report.

Ciao Gemini,
congratulations, really nice car!
What are your experiences with moneklar in Tallinn? They've had another red 2.8 Cup with some damages on the body last year. At least they offered a QP 2.8 with a low mileage around 7.000 Euro - allegedly in mint condition. Would you advise to buy a car from moneklar without local examination if it's too far away for a short trip? Do they kept their words about the condition of your Ghibli?
Best wishes Moritz

Hi Moritz. PM sent
It's the same car.
They kept the work at minimum: the front bumper was repaired and resprayed, same for the bended fender. There was no other damage to the front structure. They didn't put a new fog light, neither replace the missing intercoolet airduct, neither repair the wheel (bended and veiled).
Here is a picture of the car prior the repair (it looks ugly but it wasn't so bad).
They did quite a nice work on it.

By the way, I've finished my work on the ghibli. The car will go to my mechanic for a complete service next week.
Enjoy some pictures
I had the opportunity to do a quick test drive (I don't want to drive it hard now, first the complete service, I'll play later).
What a difference with my ghibli GT 2.0, it's really a different kind of beast.
More on that later.

Hi Ghibli GT.
Before the purchase, I sent an email to Mr Fabio Collina (Maserati Classiche), asking some informations about the car (I had the VIN).
He was kind enough to send me a quick and complete reply:
Dear Mr. XXX, thank you for your kind email.
After a check in our Historical Archive, we can give you the following information. The car in subject was originally produced on December 1996, external colour red (“Rosso Maserati”) with black interior, engine number 401346. It was delivered in Japan on december 1996. Unfortunately we have no information about Recaro seats. This car was one of the 27 Ghibli Cup produced with 2.790 cm3 engine type AM574 as requested at that time by the Maserati Importer in Japan. These cars were never homologated by Maserati because the homologations were done by the Japanese Importer directly in Japan. This is the reason because unfortunately we have not any further homologation data available.
I hope to have helped you in some way, these are the only information available in our historical Archive.
Very kind regards Fabio Collina
So, I was sure it's not a "false" CUP but one of the 27 japanese CUP . Quite a find, isn't?
It seems that there is another japonese ghibli cup somewhere in Sweden, but I have no more information about it.
I agree that the price was cheap, really cheap (and i must say that the price was widely negotiable ).
The reasons:
1. The ghibli was far away, 2500km from my home, and most of the european buyers would be afraid to buy a car in such a country (for most, Estonia or Lituania, it's like Russia or Albania, if only they knew ). By the way, I must say that Tallinn is a lovely city, it's a wonderful place for a city trip. And I know an excellent italian trattoria there.
2. Nobody knows about the japanese ghibli cup. Myself, I didn't know before. And to find informations, you need to browse japanese websites (thanks again to google translate).
3. Even if the buyer is not afraid to buy a car in Estonia, he would like to see it in person and again, Tallinn is so far away, it would cost thousand to go there. And thousand to move the car to your home. Did you know that you can take a ryanair flight, from Milano Bergamo to Tallinn for 82euro, round trip? No, of course, you didn't. Cheap, isn't? The cost for the truck from Tallin to Belgium was less than 500 euro by the way.
4. The car is japanese, Maserati can't help you to register it. It's another complication. But the car worth it, believe me.
5. Moneklar Oü, the seller, is the biggest car seller in Estonia (1500 cars/year ), and they loose money with a car standing there for months. And you know that a ghibli standing in the parking lot will quickly be expensive.
6. The ghibli needs a major and came with no history.
All these factors explain the very low purchase price.

Mi scusi, ma non capisco.
The car is not registered yet. First, I must do a complete service.
After that, I will have to pass the car through a special MOT to obtain (maybe, finger crossed) the autorisation to register the car (from the belgian transportation ministery).
For the moment, the car comes with an estonian registration, I asked the seller to register the car in Estonia (part of Europa) prior the purchase, I 'm sure it will be easier to register the car with european paper. We'll see.
